Disadvantages of Digital: (continued)

inherently more "contrasty" and lack the color saturation and shadow detail familiar to old school photographers favoring slow speed films.

In spite of the increasing sophistication of digital cameras, they still cannot compete with film cameras for rich color rendition. Though colors may be vivid, they are noticeably less saturated; subtle gradations in shadow detail and color are lost. The images below demonstrates this. Both shots were taken in bright sunlight using a circular polarizer.

film vs. digital
Film   Digital

The film image shows saturated colors and even gradation of sky. The digital counterpart shows slight banding in the sky, and the colors are noticeably less saturated.

Though digital cameras have much higher light sensitivity than film cameras, this advantage soon becomes a disadvantage under high-contrast conditions.

Their increased sensitivity virtually guarantees "blowout" when shooting towards a bright light source.
